چکیده
Water samples of some burrow pits in Kano metropolis were examined for Microcystis aeruginosa and their ability to produce toxins. Identification for the organisms was achieved by the use of standard procedure and its pure culture was obtained by capillary pipette technique. The pure culture was harvested and dried at 25oC. These were kept in refrigerator before being subjected for the analysis of toxins High liquid performance chromatography was used to detect the presence of toxins. HPLC extracts on analysis, were found to contain four variants of microcystinsRR (24%), YR (26%), LR (48%), and LF (2%). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the result showed that the microcystin variants in all the six samples did not vary at 5%level or p<0.05 during the study period. The results of the finding show the possibility of poisoning effect on a variety of livestock, fishes, domestic animals and human beings that uses the burrow pit water for drinking.

Elevated pCO2 causes a shift towards more toxic microcystin variants in nitrogen-limited Microcystis aeruginosa.
Elevated pCO2 may promote phytoplankton growth, and potentially alleviate carbon limitation during dense blooms. Under nitrogen-limited conditions, elevated pCO2 may furthermore alter the phytoplankton carbon-nitrogen (C:N) balance and thereby the synthesis of secondary metabolites, such as cyanobacterial toxins. A common group of these toxins are the microcystins, with variants that differ not...

This paper describes the occurrence of toxic cyanobacteria along the Guadiana River over its course between Mérida and Badajoz (Extremadura, Spain). Water sampling for phytoplankton quantification and toxin analysis was carried out regularly between 1999 and 2001 in six different locations, including two shallow, slow-flowing river sites, two streamed river sites and two drinking water reservoi...

Microcystin is a potent inhibitor of eukaryotic protein phosphatases and has been implicated in causing hepatotoxicity to humans and animals worldwide. It is produced primarily by the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa, although the function of the peptide in this micro-organism is unknown. In this study, a microcystin-related protein, MrpA, was identified using a microcystin-l...
متن کاملA mannan binding lectin is involved in cell-cell attachment in a toxic strain of Microcystis aeruginosa.
Microcystin, a hepatotoxin that represents a serious health risk for humans and livestock, is produced by the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in freshwater bodies worldwide. Here we describe the discovery of a lectin, microvirin (MVN), in M. aeruginosa PCC7806 that shares 33% identity with the potent anti-HIV protein cyanovirin-N from Nostoc ellipsosporum. Carbohydrate micro...
متن کاملImportance of strain type to predict the toxicological risk associated with Microcystis aeruginosa blooms: comparison of Microtox(®) analysis and immunoassay.
The occurrence of toxic cyanobacterial blooms in aquatic environments, associated with human health problems and animal deaths, has increased the need for rapid, reliable and sensitive methods to determine the toxicity of microcystin produced by cyanobacteria. An in vitro Microtox(®) system and a commercially available microcystin ELISA were used to screen out the potential risk associated with...
